Moso Island Turtle Sanctuary (Vanuatu)

Weather…

The Moso Island Turtle Sanctuary, also known through the local Tasiriki community initiative, is a vital conservation project for endangered sea turtles in northern Efate. Moso Island, with its pristine sandy beaches, provides handy nesting conditions for the Hawksbill and Green sea turtles. Since the late 1990s, the residents of Tasiriki have dedicated themselves to protecting these animals by marking nests and raising hatchlings in protected pools until they are large enough to survive in the ocean. Geographically, the sanctuary is characterized by rugged limestone cliffs and crystal-clear lagoons that also serve as important feeding grounds. The project combines traditional knowledge with modern ecological approaches and has helped raise awareness for species protection throughout Vanuatu. Visitors can visit the centre to learn more about the turtles' life cycle and the challenges posed by climate change. Through tagging programs, researchers have been able to track the migration routes of turtles born here as far as Australia and Fiji. The sanctuary is an outstanding example of the success of grassroots environmentalism.
