Getting there
Nguna Island is accessible by boat from Emua Wharf on the north coast of Efate in about 30 to 45 minutes. Small boats run regularly between the islands and take visitors to the villages.
Best season
The most pleasant time for hiking is the cooler dry season between May and October. During this period, the humidity is lower, making the ascent to the volcanic peaks significantly more comfortable.
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by extinct volcanic cones with moderately steep paths through grassland and forest. The highest point, Mount Taputoa, provides accessible paths that can, however, be slippery when wet.
What to bring
Light but sturdy hiking boots, sun protection, and sufficient water are indispensable for hikes on the island. A small daypack for provisions and a rain jacket for sudden showers are advisable.
Parking
Vehicles can typically be parked at Emua Wharf on Efate for a small fee while visiting the island. On Nguna itself, there is no significant car infrastructure or parking areas.
Safety
The hiking trails are usually well-recognizable, yet one should watch out for heat exhaustion and drink plenty of water. In villages, it is customary to ask for permission before entering private land or sacred sites.
Time needed
A visit can be done as a day trip from Efate, with the hike to Mount Taputoa taking about 3 to 5 hours. Many visitors stay overnight in simple bungalows to enjoy the island's tranquility.
