Nguna Island (Vanuatu)

Weather…

Nguna Island is a prominent volcanic island located north of Efate, dominating the skyline of northern Shefa Province. The island consists of two extinct volcanic cones, with Mount Taputoara serving as the highest peak at 593 meters. Geographically, Nguna is defined by fertile volcanic soils that support intensive subsistence agriculture. The island is the centerpiece of the Nguna-Pele Marine Protected Area, a pioneering environmental initiative covering over 3,000 hectares of reefs and seagrass beds. Historically, Nguna was a hub for early Presbyterian missionary work in the 19th century, which significantly influenced the local architecture and social structure of its villages. Today, the island is a vital center for scientific research concerning climate change and the adaptation of coral reefs to rising sea temperatures.
