Hideaway Island Marine Sanctuary

The Hideaway Island Marine Sanctuary is located in Mele Bay off the coast of Efate, serving as a pioneer project for marine conservation in Vanuatu. The protected area encompasses the waters surrounding the small Hideaway Island and has been renowned for decades for its strict fishing bans, which have led to a remarkable recovery of fish stocks. Geographically, the reserve is characterized by a shallow fringing reef that transitions into steep walls covered with hard and soft corals. A worldwide unique feature is the underwater post office, opened in 2003, which allows divers to drop waterproof postcards at a depth of about three metres. The sanctuary serves not only to protect biodiversity but also to educate visitors about the importance of intact coral reefs for coastal protection. Numerous tropical fish species, including anemonefish, parrotfish, and occasionally sea turtles, can be observed here in their natural habitat. Revenue from sustainable tourism flows directly into the maintenance of the sanctuary and community projects in nearby villages.
