Mount Zeila is the highest elevation on Vanua Lava, the largest island in the Banks group of northern Vanuatu, standing at 921 meters. This mountain is part of a massive volcanic complex that defines the island's geography and is renowned for its rich sulfur deposits. The summit region of Mount Zeila is covered in dense, moist cloud forest, hosting an immense variety of endemic flora and fauna, including rare bird species of the Banks Islands. Geologically, the mountain is an extinct volcano, yet its proximity to the active Mount Suretamatai ensures the entire region remains thermally active. Numerous hot springs and geothermal phenomena are located on the mountain's flanks. Historically, the region was of economic interest due to sulfur mining in the late 19th century. Today, Mount Zeila is a destination for demanding treks through spectacular landscapes and across countless riverbeds that supply the island with water.

Getting there
To reach Mount Zeila, take a boat from Emua Wharf on Efate to Nguna Island. Once you arrive on the island, the ascent begins from one of the local villages, usually following well-marked but steep trails.
Best season
The best months for hiking are between May and September, which coincide with the cooler and drier part of the year. Clear skies during this period offer spectacular views of the volcanic craters and the ocean.
Terrain & paths
Expect steep volcanic slopes that can be physically demanding for some climbers. The terrain consists of volcanic rock and lush tropical forest, with the path leading up to the island's highest peak and craters.
What to bring
High-quality hiking boots with excellent ankle support are necessary for the volcanic terrain. You should also carry effective sun protection, a hat, and at least two liters of water to stay hydrated during the hike.
Parking
Safe parking is available at Emua Wharf on Efate, where you leave your vehicle before boarding the boat. On Nguna Island itself, there are no cars, so all movement between the villages and the peak is on foot.
Safety
The trails can become very slippery, especially after recent rainfall, so watch your footing carefully. It is recommended to hire a local guide who knows the safest routes and can provide interesting cultural insights.

The round trip hike typically takes about four to six hours, depending on your fitness level and the weather. This includes time to rest at the summit and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding archipelago.
