Mele Cascades
Mele Cascades is a series of terraced limestone waterfalls located on Efate island, just a short drive from the capital, Port Vila. The calcium-rich water flows over natural travertine terraces, creating numerous crystal-clear pools that are popular for swimming. The main waterfall plunges approximately 35 meters into a lush, foliage-fringed basin. A well-maintained path leads visitors up along the river, often requiring wading through shallow water, which adds an interactive element to the experience. The surrounding area is characterized by tropical gardens and dense vegetation, providing a refreshing escape from the tropical sun. Geologically, the terraces were formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate, similar to famous limestone falls found elsewhere in the world. Mele Cascades is one of the most frequently visited natural attractions in Vanuatu and is vital to the local economy. Despite its popularity, sustainable management practices are in place to ensure the protection of the aquatic ecosystem and the surrounding environment.
