Mount McDonald is the highest peak on Erromango island in Tafea Province, reaching an elevation of 937 meters. Geographically, it forms the centerpiece of the island's mountainous and rugged interior, which is historically renowned for its dense sandalwood forests. Geologically, the mountain is composed of ancient volcanic materials that were shaped by significant tectonic uplift and subsequent tropical erosion. Historically, the area surrounding Mount McDonald served as a sanctuary for the local population during the tragic era of 'blackbirding' and the sandalwood trade wars of the 19th century. The slopes are covered in pristine primary tropical rainforest, which plays a vital role in preserving endemic tree species such as the Pacific Kauri. Today, due to its isolation, the mountain remains largely undisturbed, offering a critical refuge for the flora and fauna of southern Vanuatu.
