The Surkhandarya Valley is located in the southernmost part of Uzbekistan, comprising a wide depression traversed by the Surkhandarya River. The valley is bordered to the west by the Gissar Range and to the east by the Babatag Range, which provides it with a nearly subtropical microclimate. It is the warmest region in the country, where crops such as cotton, sugarcane, and citrus fruits thrive. Historically, the valley was a core territory of ancient Bactria and a vital station along the Silk Road. Numerous archaeological sites, including Dalverzin-tepa and the ancient city of Termez, testify to the influence of Buddhism and Hellenism in the region.
