Surkhandarya Pomegranate Orchards (Uzbekistan)

Weather…

The pomegranate orchards in Surkhondaryo, in the southernmost part of Uzbekistan, are known for producing some of the juiciest and sweetest pomegranates in the region. Thanks to the subtropical climate and the protected location provided by the Hissar mountain range, the trees thrive particularly well here. In Uzbek culture, the pomegranate is considered a symbol of fertility and prosperity and is often depicted in traditional art and embroidery. Cultivation in Surkhondaryo has a long tradition passed down through generations, with the 'Dashnabad' variety being especially prized. Harvesting takes place in the fall when the fruit reaches a bustling red color and is just about to burst open. Many families own private orchards, while larger plantations also contribute to supplying export markets. Besides fresh consumption, pomegranate juice is often boiled down into sauces like 'Narsharab' or used for medicinal purposes. The quality of fruit from this region is unsurpassed, making it a sought-after product in national and international markets.
