Nurata is one of Uzbekistan's key pilgrimage sites, centered around the Chashma complex and its sacred spring filled with holy trout. Strategically located between the Kyzylkum Desert and the Nuratau Mountains, the city is steeped in history. Perched on a hill overlooking the town are the ancient ruins of the 'Nur' fortress, established by Alexander the Great's troops. Travelers visit to soak in the spiritual ambiance and witness the ancient 'kariz' irrigation tunnels, which are still visible today. The region is also a hub for traditional silk weaving and ecotourism in the nearby mountain villages. For food lovers, the local mountain lamb is a must-try delicacy, celebrated for its unique flavor. Nurata is best reached by car from Bukhara or Samarkand. The prime visiting seasons are spring (March to May) for the desert blooms, and autumn (September to November) for pleasant, mild temperatures good for sightseeing.
