Bukhara is one of the most significant historical cities in Uzbekistan and was a long-standing center of Islamic scholarship and trade on the Silk Road. With a history spanning over 2,000 years, it served as the capital of the Samanid Empire and later the Emirate of Bukhara. The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, is essentially an open-air museum containing more than 140 protected monuments. Notable landmarks include the Po-i-Kalyan complex with its 12th-century Kalyan Minaret and the Samanid Mausoleum, a 10th-century masterpiece of early Islamic brick architecture. The Ark of Bukhara, a massive fortress, was the residence of the city's emirs for centuries. Bukhara was also the birthplace of great thinkers like Avicenna and Imam al-Bukhari.
