The M'Bopicuá Biopark, located near Fray Bentos in the Río Negro department, is a major center for the conservation of Uruguay's native fauna. The park is situated on the grounds of the former Liebig's Extract of Meat Company, a site of great historical significance. It was established in 1994 by the forestry company Forestal Oriental (UPM) and covers 150 hectares. The biopark's primary objective is the breeding and reintroduction of endangered native species. It is home to over 600 animals from about 80 different species, including the pampas deer, maned wolf, capybara, and various bird species. Its captive breeding program for the pampas deer has been notably successful. In addition to its conservation role, the park serves as an educational and recreational venue. It features guided tours that allow visitors to learn about the animals in an environment that simulates their natural habitat, fostering conservation awareness.
