Esteros de Farrapos National Park (Uruguay)

Weather…

Esteros de Farrapos and Islands of the Uruguay River National Park, located in the Río Negro Department, is a vital wetland ecosystem. Established in 2004 and expanded in 2008, the park covers 17,496 hectares, comprising riverine islands, marshes, and riparian forests. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro River with the Uruguay River, creating a complex mosaic of habitats that supports exceptional biodiversity. The park is particularly important as a resting and nesting site for over 200 species of birds, including many migratory ones. It also provides a habitat for threatened mammals such as the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) and the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis). The landscape is characterized by islands shaped by seasonal floods, creating a dynamic environment. The site was designated a Ramsar site in 2013, recognizing its international importance for wetland conservation.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for birdwatching is from September to February, when migratory birds arrive from North America. For the maned wolf, the months from October to April are most suitable as it's easier to spot in open grasslands.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning sees the highest bird activity in the wetlands. The maned wolf is mainly active at dusk, so plan your observations around sunrise and sunset.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a minimum distance of 100 meters from maned wolves to avoid disturbing them. Motorboat access in wetlands is prohibited in certain zones; use only marked channels.
🎒
What to bring
High-magnification binoculars are essential for bird and wolf viewing across the vast plains. Waterproof boots and insect repellent are strongly recommended due to the wet environment and mosquitoes.
🧭
Getting there
The park lies on the Uruguay River, about 200 kilometers northwest of Montevideo. Access is via National Route 24; a 4x4 is recommended for the final gravel roads.
🦌
What to expect
The maned wolf is a shy solitary animal - you'll likely have only a few minutes of sighting if any. Focus on the rich birdlife, which is far more frequently seen, and consider a wolf sighting a bonus.
