Cerro Pan de Azúcar Fauna Reserve (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Cerro Pan de Azúcar Fauna Reserve, located at the base of the hill of the same name near Piriápolis, is a vital center for the conservation of Uruguay's native fauna. The hill itself, at 389 meters, is one of the highest points in the country and is crowned by a 35-meter-tall cross. The reserve was established in 1980 by the municipality of Maldonado in collaboration with zoologist Tabaré González Sierra. It focuses on the breeding and rehabilitation of native species in an environment that resembles their natural habitats. Spanning approximately 86 hectares, the reserve is home to a variety of animals, including the pampas deer, cougar, jaguar, tapir, and numerous bird and reptile species. It works in close partnership with SOS Rescate de Fauna Marina, an organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals. In addition to its conservation work, the reserve features a unique recreational and educational space, where visitors can observe wildlife and undertake the challenging but rewarding climb to the hill's summit.
