The Umm an-Nar archaeological site, located on an island off Abu Dhabi, is the namesake for a significant Bronze Age culture that flourished between 2500 and 2000 BCE. Its discovery in 1958 by Danish archaeologists revolutionized the understanding of the early history of the Arabian Peninsula. The site features characteristic circular communal tombs constructed from precisely fitted stones, with facades often decorated with reliefs of animals such as gazelles and snakes. Alongside the tombs, remains of settlements were found, indicating a maritime society that engaged in extensive trade with Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. Copper mining and fishing formed the economic backbone of this civilization. The Umm an-Nar culture marks a transition toward more complex social structures and technological advancements in metallurgy. Today, the site is a world-class protected monument testifying to the region's central role in the early international trade networks.
