Vilniansk is a city in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast of southeastern Ukraine, having served as the administrative center of the Vilniansk Raion until 2020. The settlement was founded in 1840 under the name Sofiivka, and its early growth was significantly catalyzed by the completion of the Lozova-Sevastopol railway in the 1870s. Geographically, the city is situated within the steppe zone, characterized by fertile chernozem soils and a temperate continental climate. The economic profile of Vilniansk is traditionally industrial, with a particular emphasis on mechanical engineering and metalworking, notably the local plant for tableware production. In addition to industry, the processing of agricultural raw materials from the surrounding fertile plains plays a vital role in the local economy. The city maintains a network of educational, medical, and cultural institutions that support the social fabric of the region. Despite recent regional instabilities, Vilniansk continues to function as a significant logistical and economic hub for the surrounding rural communities.
