Toretsk, formerly known as Dzerzhynsk, is a city of regional significance in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. Founded in the early 19th century, the settlement quickly developed into a major center for coal mining, an industry that shaped the life and identity of the entire Donbas region for over a century. The landscape around the city is marked by the characteristic spoil tips and mining infrastructure. The urban fabric largely consists of Soviet-era architecture typical of industrial centers of that period, interspersed with some older buildings and monuments commemorating the mining heritage. The culture in Toretsk is heavily influenced by its industrial legacy. Local festivals often celebrated the work of miners, and the community was close-knit. The traditional cuisine of the region is hearty and nutritious, designed to sustain workers. Dishes like borsch, varenyky (dumplings), and holubtsi (cabbage rolls) are common. The city served as an administrative and economic hub for the surrounding mining settlements. Before the recent conflicts, Toretsk was connected by road and rail to the main cities of the region, such as Donetsk and Kramatorsk. Travel was typically by train or bus from larger Ukrainian cities. Due to the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine since 2014, the city's infrastructure has been severely damaged, and it is located in close proximity to the frontline. Travel to the region is currently extremely dangerous and not advised. The city and its population have suffered severely from the impact of the war, which has fundamentally altered its development and future.
