Bakhmut is located in eastern Ukraine on the banks of the Bakhmutka River, with a history dating back to 1571 when it was first recorded as a southern border outpost. The city evolved into a major industrial hub during the 18th and 19th centuries, primarily driven by the exploitation of vast rock salt deposits that began under state supervision in 1701. Beyond the salt industry, Bakhmut achieved international recognition for its sparkling wine production, with wineries established in former gypsum mines at depths exceeding 70 meters, providing excellent aging conditions. Geographically, the city serves as a vital transportation junction within the Donets Basin. In modern times, Bakhmut experienced near-total destruction during the protracted siege of 2022-2023, which became one of the most intense battles in contemporary European history. Despite the devastation, its legacy as the former administrative center of the Slavo-Serbia province and a cornerstone of the regional mining industry persists.
