Avdiivka is an industrial city in the Donetsk Oblast that has gained global recognition for its strategic location and pivotal role in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict. Founded in 1778, it developed during the 20th century into one of the most critical centers of heavy industry in the Donbas. The heart of the local economy was the Avdiivka Coke Plant, which stood as the largest facility of its kind in Europe and was vital for Ukraine's overall steel production. Due to its proximity to the regional capital of Donetsk, Avdiivka served as an important industrial suburb, but since 2014, it has been situated directly on the front lines. For over a decade, the city has been the site of fierce combat, resulting in the near-total destruction of its civilian infrastructure and industrial assets. Despite constant threats, Avdiivka long served as a key bastion of Ukrainian resistance in the east. The name Avdiivka is synonymous with unimaginable sacrifice and the total devastation characteristic of modern trench warfare.
