St. Barbara's Church in Berdychiv is a significant religious and historical landmark in the Zhytomyr region. The current building was constructed in 1826 on the site of a previous wooden church, designed in the Neoclassical style. The sanctuary is most famous as the location where the French writer Honoré de Balzac married the Polish noblewoman Evelina Hańska on March 14, 1850. The architecture of the church is characterized by its clean lines, an impressive columned facade, and a harmoniously designed interior. During the Soviet era, the church was closed to religious services and for a time used as a gymnasium before being returned to the Catholic community in the 1990s. Following extensive restoration works, the building now shines once again in its original splendor. For fans of Balzac and those interested in architecture, the church is an indispensable stop on a journey through the Volhynia region, serving as an important witness to European cultural history.
