Meotida National Nature Park stretches along the coast of the Sea of Azov in the Donetsk region and was officially established on December 25, 2009. The protected area covers approximately 20,000 hectares, with a significant portion dedicated to marine zones and shallow lagoons. Geographically, the park is defined by its distinctive sand spits and coastal marshes which create a specialized microclimate for endangered species. These areas serve as a critical stopover for millions of migratory birds along the Azov-Black Sea migration corridor. Of particular importance is the presence of the Dalmatian pelican, which finds one of its few European breeding grounds here. In addition to its ornithological significance, the park protects rare steppe vegetation that transitions directly into saline coastal habitats. Despite ecological challenges, Meotida remains an essential sanctuary for maintaining the marine biodiversity of the northern Azov region.

Best season

Meotida National Park is best for birdwatching in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when large flocks of waterfowl pass through. In summer, gulls, terns, and waders nest on the sandbars and spits.

Early morning sees the quietest beaches and lagoons with the most active birds foraging. Late afternoon often brings impressive flight maneuvers from gulls and terns hunting fish.

Etiquette

Do not enter breeding colonies on the spits and islands - keep a distance of at least 200 meters. Carrying drones is usually prohibited as they heavily disturb the birds.

What to bring

Binoculars with 8-10x magnification are sufficient for observing birds on sandbars and water. Sun protection, hat, and plenty of water are essential due to the open, exposed coastline.

Getting there

The park lies on the Sea of Azov coast in Donetsk Oblast; main access points are the towns of Mariupol and Urzuf. Some areas are reachable only via unpaved roads; a 4x4 vehicle is beneficial.
