Volnovakha is a strategically crucial city located in the southwestern part of the Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine, situated on the watershed between the Sea of Azov and the Dnieper basin. The city's history is deeply intertwined with the construction of the Yuzivka-Mariupol railway in 1881, when the settlement was established as a small railway station. Due to its location at the intersection of major transport routes, Volnovakha rapidly developed into a logistical hub for the shipment of coal and iron from the Donbas region. Before the conflict, the city was a significant center for the construction industry, railway operations, and agricultural processing. In 2022, Volnovakha was almost entirely destroyed during the Russian invasion, but the fierce resistance of its defenders earned the city the honorary title of "Hero City of Ukraine." The settlement stands as a tragic milestone in regional history, symbolizing the devastating impact of modern warfare on civilian populations. Despite the current state of ruin, its historical legacy as a vital transport link remains significant.
