Medzhybizh Fortress
Medzhybizh Fortress, located at the confluence of the Southern Bug and Buzhok rivers, is one of the most striking Renaissance defensive structures in Ukraine. Massively expanded in the 16th century under the Sieniawski noble family, the stone complex replaced an earlier wooden fortification. The fortress is shaped like an irregular triangle and features three powerful corner towers and a central castle chapel. Because of its strategic location bordering the Wild Fields, it was the site of numerous battles against Ottoman and Tatar invaders. In the 19th century, the fortress was remodeled in the Neo-Gothic style before falling into neglect during the Soviet era. Today, Medzhybizh is a state historical and cultural reserve, housing several museums, including one dedicated to the Holodomor. Continuous restoration efforts are underway to return this jewel of Podolian military architecture to its former glory.
