Starokostiantyniv Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Starokostiantyniv Castle was built between 1561 and 1571 by Prince Konstanty-Vasyl Ostrogski at the confluence of the Sluch and Ikopot rivers. The fortress was designed as a vital strategic outpost to protect the southern borders of Volhynia from frequent Crimean Tatar raids along the so-called Black Route. The ensemble consists of a two-story princely palace, a massive defensive tower, and the Trinity Church, which was uniquely integrated into the defensive perimeter. The church itself features exceptionally thick walls and embrasures, serving as a stronghold within the fortress during sieges. Renowned for its strength and favorable natural location between rivers, the castle was famously never captured by Tatar forces throughout its entire history. The architecture reflects a blend of late Gothic and Renaissance styles, typical of the Ostrogski family's extensive building projects. Today, the castle is a major historical and cultural reserve, undergoing gradual restoration to preserve its 16th-century heritage.
