Izium is located in the Kharkiv region on the banks of the Siverskyi Donets River, serving as a city of immense strategic and historical importance. Often called the 'Gateway to the Donbas,' the city is overlooked by Mount Kremenets, the highest elevation in the region, providing a commanding view of the surrounding plains. Archaeological finds, such as the famous Cuman (Polovtsian) stone statues on the mountain peak, testify to human settlement since ancient times. In the 17th century, Izium was developed as a fortress to guard against Crimean Tatar raids and became the headquarters of a Cossack regiment. Its most significant landmark is the Transfiguration Cathedral, built in 1684, an exquisite example of Ukrainian Baroque architecture. In modern times, the city evolved into a hub for the optical industry. Due to its strategic location, Izium has been the site of intense combat in various conflicts, most recently in 2022, leaving profound marks on its urban landscape.
