Sviatohirsk Lavra (Ukraine)

Weather…

Sviatohirsk Lavra, or the Monastery of the Holy Mountains, is an extraordinary Orthodox monastery located on the steep chalk cliffs of the Seversky Donets River in eastern Ukraine. The site is famous for its intricate cave systems and churches carved directly into the white chalk rock, some of which date back to the earliest settlements in the 16th century. The main ensemble features the 19th-century Dormition Cathedral, a grand structure built in the Russo-Byzantine style with five majestic domes. One of the most iconic structures is St. Nicholas Church, which sits precariously on the peak of a chalk pillar, appearing as if it grew naturally out of the stone. After decades of closure during the Soviet era, when it served as a sanitarium, the monastery was restored to the church in 1992 and granted Lavra status in 2004. It is surrounded by the Holy Mountains National Nature Park, which protects the unique flora and geological formations of the region.
