Kupiansk is a strategically vital city in eastern Ukraine, located within the Kharkiv Oblast on the banks of the Oskil River. Founded in 1655 as a sloboda settlement, its favorable location allowed it to develop quickly into a significant commercial hub and, later, one of the country's most important railway junctions. The expansion of rail networks in the late 19th century transformed Kupiansk into a logistical powerhouse, connecting the industrial regions of the Donbas with the rest of Ukraine and beyond. Beyond transportation, the city's economy is anchored by the food industry, particularly in the production of dairy and meat products. During the Russian-Ukrainian war, the city gained international attention due to its occupation and subsequent liberation by Ukrainian forces in September 2022. Kupiansk remains a critical transit corridor, making its stability essential for the region's overall logistics and military dynamics. Despite facing significant destruction, the city is focused on rebuilding its infrastructure and restoring basic services for its citizens.
