Vicovu de Jos is a large commune in the historic northern region of Bucovina, Suceava County, Romania. Located in the scenic valley of the Suceava River, near the border with Ukraine, it serves as a gateway to the mountainous beauty of the Bukovinian Ridges (Obcinele Bucovinei). The village has a long history, being first mentioned in documents in the 15th century as part of the lands belonging to the famous Putna Monastery. This connection to Moldavian royalty and spirituality is still evident in the local culture. The inhabitants are known for their exceptional craftsmanship, particularly in woodworking, leather goods, and traditional embroidery. During the Austro-Hungarian period, the village saw significant administrative and architectural influences that shaped its modern layout. Today, Vicovu de Jos is a thriving community where modern agriculture and small businesses coexist with age-old traditions. The village is particularly famous for its animated folk festivals, where locals proudly wear intricate traditional costumes that are considered masterpieces of Romanian folk art.
