Bakota Cave Monastery (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Bakota Cave Monastery is a captivating archaeological and spiritual landmark located on the banks of the Dniester River in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast. Bakota was once a thriving city and the capital of the Podillia region until it was devastated by the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. The monastery is believed to have been established in the 11th or 12th century, with monks carving chambers directly into the soft limestone of the White Mountain (Bila Hora). The site's history took a dramatic turn in 1981 when the village of Bakota and its surrounding valleys were deliberately flooded to create the Dniester Reservoir. Today, the town of Bakota has vanished from the map, leaving only the cave monastery perched high on a cliff overlooking the vast expanse of water. Visitors can explore rock-cut cells, ancient burial sites, and a small chapel, as well as three sacred springs. The location has remarkable panoramic views of the Dniester Canyon, often referred to as the 'Ukrainian Sea,' attracting both religious pilgrims and nature enthusiasts.
