Yenakiieve is a major industrial city located in the Donets Basin of eastern Ukraine, officially established in 1898 around a large iron and steel works. The city was named after the engineer Fedir Yenakiiev, who was instrumental in developing the local industrial infrastructure and secured the necessary investments for its growth. Geographically, it sits on the Krynka River in a hilly steppe region that is exceptionally rich in mineral resources, particularly coal. During the Soviet era, between 1928 and 1943, the city was renamed Ordzhonikidze in honor of a prominent Bolshevik leader before reverting to its original name. The local economy remains heavily dependent on heavy industry and coal mining, with the Yenakiieve Iron and Steel Works being a central economic pillar for decades. The city gained international attention as the birthplace of the former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Its urban landscape is characterized by sprawling industrial complexes and residential districts built to house the vast workforce.
