Achwa River (Uganda)

Weather…

The Achwa River is a significant river in northern Uganda. It originates in the Karamoja highlands of eastern Uganda and flows in a northwesterly direction through the Acholi region before crossing the border into South Sudan, where it is known as the Aswa River. In South Sudan, it eventually joins the Bahr al-Jabal, a section of the White Nile. The river is largely seasonal, and its water level fluctuates dramatically between the wet and dry seasons. During the rainy season, it can swell into a raging torrent, making travel in the region difficult. The Achwa River flows through several protected areas, including Kidepo Valley National Park and the Aswa-Lolim Wildlife Reserve, serving as a vital water source for wildlife. Historically, the river valley was an important agricultural area for the Acholi people. In recent years, there have been plans to develop hydroelectric projects on the river, such as the Achwa Hydroelectric Power Station, to meet Uganda's growing energy demands.
