El Atteuf (Algeria)

Weather…

El Atteuf is the cradle of civilization in the M'zab Valley and marked the beginning of a remarkable architectural tradition. The city rises picturesquely on a hillside and is crowned by the asymmetrical Sidi Brahim Mosque, whose minaret stands out distinctly from other structures. It is often said that the famous architect Le Corbusier was inspired by this specific mosque when he designed the Notre-Dame-du-Haut chapel in Ronchamp. Like the other cities of the Pentapolis, El Atteuf is built around the central mosque. The winding, pastel-colored alleyways made of mud and plaster are a masterpiece of climate adaptation, capturing the scarce breezes of the Sahara. El Atteuf is located in close proximity to Ghardaia and benefits from the same access routes. Those who truly want to understand the 1000-year history of the valley should start their exploration here. A visit in late autumn or winter is highly recommended to avoid the scorching desert sun.
