Büzmeýin, previously called Abadan and earlier Bezmein, is today a western suburb of the capital Ashgabat with around 50,000 inhabitants. The settlement emerged in the late 19th century as a station on the Trans-Caspian Railway and grew during the Soviet era into an important industrial node. It hosts one of Turkmenistan's largest gas-fired power stations, supplying a significant share of the national electricity demand, along with a glass works, a cement plant and textile factories. In 2013 the district was formally incorporated into the city of Ashgabat, yet it retained its historic character of low residential blocks, Soviet industrial architecture and railway depots. To the west rise the foothills of the Kopet Dag and recreation grounds favoured by Ashgabat's residents.
