Ephesus
Ephesus, located near the modern town of Selçuk in İzmir Province, was one of the most significant metropolises of the ancient world. Founded as an Ionian Greek settlement, the city reached its zenith under Roman rule as the capital of the Proconsular Asia province. Ephesus was world-renowned for the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, though only a single pillar remains today. Among its most impressive architectural survivors are the Library of Celsus, completed in 117 CE, and the Great Theater, which could accommodate 25,000 spectators. The city served as a vital center for early Christianity and was a primary site for the ministry of the Apostle Paul. At its peak during the 1st century CE, Ephesus had an estimated population of 250,000 residents. The eventual silting of its harbor led to economic decline and the city's abandonment during the Middle Ages.
