Karaburun is a mountainous peninsula on the western edge of İzmir province that has preserved its natural character away from mass tourism. The topography of the region, known in antiquity as Mimas, drops steeply into the Aegean Sea, creating winding coastal roads and hidden bays. During the winter months, the area is a major center for narcissus flower cultivation in Turkey. The peninsula's beaches are pebbly and rocky, with exceptionally clear water quality. Plaj Ardıç and Kocakum Plajı are among the most recognized developed bathing spots. The protected bay of Ayıbalığı Plajı serves as a base for surfers and divers. Korsan Plajı is difficult to access but rewards visitors with pristine sea water. The coastal caves are an important habitat for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Traditional agriculture, particularly the cultivation of olives and citrus fruits, still defines the local villages. Due to the windy microclimate, significant wind energy projects have been developed on the peninsula's ridge over the past decade.
