Al-Muazzam Fort, located southeast of Tabuk, is one of the most impressive Ottoman fortresses along the historic Syrian Hajj route. It was constructed in 1622 AD during the reign of Sultan Osman II to protect pilgrims traveling to Mecca and Medina from raids and the harsh desert environment. The square-shaped fortress is characterized by its massive walls and four corner towers built from precisely hewn stone blocks. A central feature of the site is the enormous water reservoir (birka), which is one of the largest of its kind in the region, designed to collect rainwater for the supply of passing caravans. The fort's architecture reflects Ottoman military engineering, with the ground floor serving as storage and stables, while the upper floor provided living quarters for the garrison. Despite the passage of centuries and the unforgiving desert climate, the structure remains largely intact, testifying to the strategic importance of pilgrimage logistics. Today, Al-Muazzam is a vital historical landmark documenting the link between the Ottoman Empire and the Hejaz.
