The Büyük Menderes River, historically known as the Maeander, is the most significant river in southwestern Turkey and the namesake of the geographical term for river loops. Originating near Dinar in the inner Anatolian plateau, the river flows for approximately 548 kilometers through a fertile tectonic valley before discharging into the Aegean Sea near the ancient city of Miletus. The valley has been a cradle of civilization since antiquity, serving as the heartland of ancient Caria and supporting major cities like Magnesia, Tralleis, and Nysa. The river's high sediment load is world-renowned for having radically altered the coastline over millennia; former maritime powers like Miletus and Priene are now located several kilometers inland due to the expansion of the river delta. Today, the Büyük Menderes is essential for the region's large-scale agriculture, particularly in cotton and fig production, and its flow is managed by several infrastructure projects, including the Kemer and Adıgüzel dams.

Getting there
The river is easily accessible via highways near cities like Aydın or Selçuk. Many viewpoints overlooking the famous meanders are located directly along the regional country roads.
Best season
Spring is the best time to see the river with high water levels and a lush green landscape. Autumn also provides pleasant temperatures good for birdwatching near the river delta areas.
Terrain & paths
The terrain along the river is predominantly flat and marked by fertile agricultural land. The banks can be muddy after rainfall, while hiking paths are mostly firm and easy to navigate.
What to bring
Light clothing and good sun protection are important due to the open spaces. Binoculars are highly recommended for observing the rich birdlife in the wetlands along the river's course.

Parking is available in the villages along the riverbanks or at designated stopping points along the roads. It is often possible to pull over near viewpoints if traffic is not obstructed.

The riverbanks can be unstable, especially during periods of high water. In the summer months, be mindful of insects and carry enough drinking water, as it gets very hot in the open sun.
