The Kaçkar Mountains are the highest peaks of the Pontic Alps, stretching along the Black Sea coast. With summits reaching nearly 4000 meters, they offer spectacular glacial lakes, rushing rivers, and an incredibly diverse flora. Adventurers visit for mountaineering, trekking, and heliskiing during the winter months. The region is dotted with traditional high-altitude pastures called 'yaylas,' where local culture remains bustling. The steep slopes are frequently shrouded in mist, lending the mountains a mystical and dramatic atmosphere. The prime time for trekking is mid-summer, when the snow melts to reveal paths and alpine flowers are in full bloom. Regional cuisine centers on fresh dairy, honey, and the famous 'Mıhlama' (a cornmeal and cheese dish). Access is typically through Rize or Artvin provinces. Given the challenging terrain, hiring local guides is highly recommended. The range is also home to rare wildlife, including brown bears and chamois, making it one of Turkey's most significant areas for biodiversity and nature conservation.
