Great Mosque of Kairouan (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Mosque of Uqba, is one of the most significant Islamic monuments in North Africa and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in 670 AD by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi, it established the foundation for the first Muslim city in the Maghreb region. The current architectural complex dates primarily from the Aghlabid period in the 9th century and served as a prototype for many subsequent mosques in the western Islamic world. Its square, three-tiered minaret is particularly noteworthy as one of the oldest surviving minarets in existence. The expansive courtyard is surrounded by colonnades featuring over 400 antique marble and porphyry columns salvaged from Roman and Byzantine ruins across Tunisia. Beyond its religious importance as a pilgrimage destination, the mosque functioned for centuries as a center for science and Islamic jurisprudence. The interior prayer hall, with its intricate wood carvings and decorative tiles, remains a testament to the cultural zenith of the Kairouan province.
