Aghlabid Basins (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Aghlabid Basins in Kairouan are considered among the most significant hydraulic engineering achievements of the medieval Islamic world. Constructed between 860 and 862 during the reign of the Aghlabid emir Abu Ibrahim Ahmed, they were designed to ensure a reliable water supply for the city in its arid steppe environment. This impressive system consists of two interconnected open-air reservoirs: a smaller settling basin used for filtration and a massive main basin measuring 128 meters in diameter. The main basin is enclosed by 48 polygonal walls reinforced with sturdy pillars to withstand the immense pressure of the stored water. In the center of the large basin, a pavilion once stood, providing the emir with a cool retreat. Water was transported to the site via a sophisticated aqueduct system from mountains located more than 30 kilometers away. Despite the toll taken by time and historical conflicts, the basins remain partially preserved today, testifying to the technical prowess of the Aghlabid dynasty. They are a landmark of Kairouan, highlighting the city's historical role.
