Hunga Tonga (Tonga)

Weather…

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai is a submarine volcano located approximately 65 kilometers north of the capital, Nuku'alofa. In January 2022, one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions of modern history occurred here, which was registered worldwide. The eruption sent an ash plume up to a height of 58 kilometers into the stratosphere and triggered devastating tsunamis throughout the entire Pacific region. The energy of the explosion was estimated to be equivalent to several hundred Hiroshima atomic bombs. Before the eruption, the volcano connected two small islands, which, however, were almost completely destroyed by the immense forces. Geologically, the volcano is part of the Tonga-Kermadec island arc, one of the most active subduction zones on Earth. Scientists are intensively studying the site to understand the impacts of such extreme events on the global climate and the marine environment. The eruption lasting changed the local geography and the seafloor.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Accessible only by boat from Nuku'alofa. Due to the massive 2022 eruption, the island's coastline has changed radically; check local maritime permits before planning a trip.
📅
Best season
The dry season between May and October provides the best sea conditions for the crossing. Avoid the cyclone season (November to April) when sea travel is often suspended.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The island features newly formed volcanic ash fields and unstable rocky slopes. The terrain is barren, rugged, and highly susceptible to erosion after the recent explosion.
🎒
What to bring
Wear heavy-duty boots for walking on ash and sharp lava. Bring a dust mask, plenty of drinking water, high-factor sun protection, and a basic first-aid kit for small cuts.
🅿️
Parking
Leave your vehicle at the main wharf parking area in Nuku'alofa. Most local boat operators are based near the waterfront and can provide directions for safe long-term parking.
⚠️
Safety
This remains an active volcanic zone. Be aware of unstable ground and potential gas emissions. Always follow the instructions of your guide and monitor official alerts.
⏱️
Time needed
A boat trip to the area usually takes a full day (6 to 8 hours). Direct landings may be prohibited or strictly limited depending on current seismic and volcanic activity.
