Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (Tonga)

Weather…

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai is a globally renowned submarine volcano in Tonga's Ha'apai archipelago, which garnered international attention due to its massive eruption in January 2022. Originally consisting of two separate islands, they were joined by a land bridge of ash and tuff during an eruption in 2014. The eruption on January 15, 2022, was one of the most powerful of the 21st century, triggering a global tsunami and sending an ash plume into the mesosphere at an altitude of 58 kilometers. The explosion destroyed most of the island's structure, leaving only small fragments of the original landmass above sea level. Geologically, it is a large submarine caldera that forms part of the Tofua volcanic arc. The scientific significance of the site is immense, as the rapid creation and destruction of land provide valuable insights into volcanic island formation and oceanic ecosystems.
