Udon Thani serves as a major commercial and administrative hub in Northeast Thailand, strategically located on the Khorat Plateau. The region is internationally recognized for the nearby Ban Chiang archaeological site, which provides evidence of a Bronze Age civilization dating back over 5,000 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Modern Udon Thani was officially founded in 1893 by Prince Prajak Sillapakom, whose monument remains a central landmark today. During the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s, the city expanded rapidly due to the presence of a United States Air Force base, which left a lasting impact on local infrastructure and the economy. Today, it is a vital link for trade with Laos, situated only 50 kilometers south of the border at Nong Khai. The city's landscape is characterized by large public parks, such as Nong Prajak Park, and bustling markets that specialize in local agricultural products and traditional Isan silk textiles.
