Ruins of Songo Mnara (Tanzania)

Weather…

Songo Mnara is an exceptionally well-preserved ruin of a Swahili trading town located on an island in southern Tanzania. The city flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries and was closely linked to nearby Kilwa Kisiwani. Unlike many other coastal settlements, Songo Mnara was built according to a unified plan using coral stone, which facilitates the archaeological study of medieval urban life. The ruins include six mosques, numerous residential buildings with courtyards, and a monumental palace complex. The structures are characterized by artistic niches in the walls and decorative porcelain inlays. Songo Mnara provides deep insight into the social hierarchy and wealth of the Swahili elite during the peak of Indian Ocean trade. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981 alongside Kilwa Kisiwani.
