Mtwara is located in the extreme southeast of Tanzania along the Indian Ocean coast, serving as the administrative capital of the Mtwara Region. The town was specifically planned and constructed in the late 1940s as a deep-water port to support the British colonial government's unsuccessful Groundnut Scheme. Today, Mtwara is a major economic center, primarily driven by the export of cashew nuts, which are produced extensively throughout the region. In recent years, the town's prominence has risen due to the discovery of significant natural gas reserves in Mnazi Bay, leading to increased investment in local infrastructure and industrial capacity. The historic settlement of Mikindani, an ancient Arab and later German trading post, is located just a few kilometers away, preserving the area's rich colonial heritage. Mtwara is equipped with a modern commercial port and an airport providing links to Dar es Salaam. Its proximity to the Mozambican border makes it a critical location for cross-border trade and regional security. The town also serves as a gateway to the Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park.
