Rio Maior, located in the heart of Portugal, is a town whose identity is intrinsically linked to its exceptional natural resources. Its most famous feature is the Rio Maior salt pans, a rare example of inland salt extraction. An underground rock salt stream feeds the pans, and salt is still harvested using traditional methods, a practice dating back over 800 years. The surrounding wooden houses and cobblestone streets add to the site's rustic charm. Besides salt, the town is also known for its dynamic sports culture, hosting a high-performance sports training centre that attracts athletes from around the world. The local gastronomy is hearty and delicious. Dishes are often based on local meats and vegetables. A local speciality is 'Galo com Nozes' (rooster with walnuts). Don't miss the chance to try the local bread and sweets, baked in traditional wood-fired ovens. The 'Flor de Sal' produced at the salt pans is a sought-after gourmet product and a first-rate souvenir. Rio Maior is situated about 80 kilometres north of Lisbon and is easily accessible by car via the A15 motorway. Bus services from Lisbon and other major cities are also available. The best time to visit is from spring to autumn. In summer, the salt pans are in full operation, which is a fascinating sight. The region is also part of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring the park's rich flora and fauna.
