Alcobaça Monastery (Portugal)

Weather…

The Monastery of Santa Maria d'Alcobaça, founded in the 12th century by King Afonso Henriques, is a masterpiece of Cistercian Gothic architecture. Its scale and purity of design reflect the Cistercian Order's good of austerity and spiritual focus. The church was the first purely Gothic building in Portugal, featuring an impressively high and narrow nave. Central to the monastery's history are the tombs of King Pedro I and his lover Inês de Castro, who was murdered on the orders of Pedro's father. Their ornate 14th-century sarcophagi are placed face to face, so that upon their resurrection, the first thing they see is each other. The monastery's massive kitchen and the refectory speak to the wealth and influence the monks held during the Middle Ages. In 1989, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its artistic value.
