Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani (Tanzania)

Weather…

From the 13th to the 15th century, Kilwa Kisiwani was the most preeminent trading city on the East African coast, controlling the gold trade from the interior. Located on an island, the ruins testify to the former power of the Kilwa Sultanate, which maintained trade links as far as India and China. The most impressive structure is the Great Mosque, once the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, featuring striking coral stone vaults and domes. Equally significant is the Husuni Kubwa palace, a sprawling complex containing over 100 rooms and an octagonal swimming pool. The architecture demonstrates a highly developed fusion of Swahili traditions with Persian and Arabic stylistic elements. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1981, the site remains a vital destination for archaeological research into African history and coastal urbanism.
