Pavia Castle (Portugal)

Weather…

The Castelo de Pavia is located in the parish of the same name within the Mora district and is closely linked to the medieval settlement of the Alentejo. The founding of the settlement dates back to 1287, when King Dinis I permitted Italian settlers from Pavia to establish themselves here and construct a fortification. Although only a few remains of the original castle exist today, such as parts of the curtain wall and a square tower, they testify to the site's strategic importance during the Reconquista. Particularly noteworthy is its proximity to the famous Anta-Capela de São Dinis, a prehistoric megalithic tomb converted into a Christian chapel in the 17th century. The architecture of the remaining fortification elements displays typical Gothic features, supplemented over the centuries by Manueline details. Pavia remains a fascinating example of cultural exchange and defense strategies in medieval rural Portugal.
