Laomei Green Reef (Taiwan)

Weather…

Laomei Green Reef is located on the northern coast of Taiwan in Shimen District and represents a rare geomorphological phenomenon. The reef is composed of volcanic rock, specifically andesite, originated from the Tatun Volcanic Group eruptions and subsequently carved by marine erosion into parallel trenches and ridges. Every year between March and May, the stone structures are covered by lively green algae (Ulva and Enteromorpha species), transforming the shoreline into a spectacular emerald carpet. This phenomenon is strictly seasonal, as the algae perish under the intense summer sun. The reef extends for about 2 kilometers and provides a unique case study of the interaction between volcanic substrates and marine biology. To protect the fragile ecosystem, walking on the algae-covered reefs is strictly prohibited for visitors. It has become a premier destination for nature photographers seeking the first-rate balance of green stone and crashing waves.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The reef is located along the northern coast of Taiwan and can usually be reached by taking a bus from the nearby Tamsui MRT Station. Once in the coastal village of Laomei, the beach and the algae-covered trenches are just a short walk away.
📅
Best season
The absolute best time to visit is during the spring months, typically from March to May, when the green algae thoroughly covers the volcanic rocks. Outside of this spring window, the rocks are generally bare and lose their distinct spirited color.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area features sandy beaches leading up to a series of parallel, grooved volcanic rock trenches. Walking directly on the algae-covered sections is heavily discouraged to protect the delicate ecosystem and avoid the extremely slippery surfaces.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes suitable for sandy beaches are recommended, along with sun protection or windbreakers depending on the coastal weather. Photography enthusiasts should absolutely bring a camera to capture the striking contrast of green and blue.
🅿️
Parking
There is usually public parking available within Laomei village or near the nearby Fuguijiao Lighthouse. During the peak algae blooming season in spring, these parking areas can fill up quickly, so arriving early in the day is highly advisable.
⚠️
Safety
The coastal rocks and the algae itself can be remarkably slick, creating a significant slipping hazard near the water. Visitors must constantly check local tide schedules, as the trenches can be suddenly overwhelmed by incoming waves during high tide.
⏱️
Time needed
Exploring the reef and taking photographs typically takes around one to two hours for most casual visitors. You can easily extend your trip by walking along the broader coastal paths towards the nearby lighthouse and exploring the fishing village.
