Fort San Domingo (Taiwan)

Weather…

Fort San Domingo is a historic fortress complex in Tamsui, New Taipei City, that played a pivotal role in Taiwan's colonial history. Originally built of wood by the Spanish in 1628, it was later destroyed and rebuilt in stone by the Dutch in 1644 as Fort Antonio. The striking red color of the outer walls, which earned it the local nickname 'Red Castle,' dates back to the period of British administration. Starting in 1867, the British government leased the fort and utilized it as a consulate for over a century, constructing an adjacent two-story Victorian-style brick residence. Perched on a hill overlooking the mouth of the Tamsui River, the fort provides strategic views of the coastline. Today, Fort San Domingo is a museum that documents the complex historical layers of Spanish, Dutch, British, and Chinese influences on the island's development.
